Project PAPE Overview
PAPE powers cross-border payments all across Africa
What is PAPE ?
PAPE
(the Pan-African Payment Ecosystem) is an ecosystem of African developers, integrators, liquidity providers and financial institutions with the sole aim of facilitating cross-border money transfers all across Africa.
PAPE seamlessly handles both Peer to Peer payments and Merchant payments.
PAPE itself is not a financial institution, neither is it a wallet. End user funds will never be held by PAPE. Instead, end users will be expected to use their existing banking apps or mobile money providers to transfer funds from one African country to another.
Use Cases
Send money from a bank in Kenya to a bank Nigeria, and vice versa.
Send money from a mobile-money platform in Cameroon to a digital wallet in Nigeria and vice versa.
The PAPE Ecosystem
The PAPE ecosystem currently consists of:
Solution Providers: e.g. Interstellar
Liquidity Providers: e.g. Dangote, MTN
Financial Institutions: E.g. banks, digital wallets, mobile money platforms.
and Integrators: Usually the dev teams within financial institutions.
The more financial institutions join PAPE, the more powerful and useful the whole ecosystem becomes.
This document is for Integrators.
You, the Integrator!
This document is for you. You’ll learn the following:
How to onboard a financial institution
How to onboard liquidity providers.
Walkthroughs and APIs to manage on-off ramp for liquidity providers (deposits and withdrawals)
Walkthroughs and APIs to honor withdrawal requests from users on the receiving end of a cross-border payment.
The ideal Integration team
The ideal integration team would be comprised of the following roles:
- A Project Management lead.
- High level management team that will define how liquidity providers within their financial institutions will be vetted, and how these liquidity providers will perform deposits and withdrawals with the PAPE platform.
- High level management team that will define how non-liquidity provider customers within their financial institution will perform cross-border payments. Customers are expected to interface only with existing banking apps.
- Backend engineers familiar with the financial institution’s tech stack.
- Frontend engineers familiar with the financial institution’s tech stack.
- Security experts to ensure all relevant access points are secured.
- High level management team that will set up a (virtual or actual) ledger account to be used for PAPE transactions.
- Devops management to host the backend and frontend services the bank will need to interact with PAPE.
